Clockwork Bird by Sparkytron Clockwork Bird by Sparkytron
This was originally going to be my entry in BBC#65 (a contest on BZPower) but I never finished him in time. Because I was satisfied with the areas I already built (the head, wings and upper-body) I decided to make the rest too. This is my second attempt at a clockwork MOC. My last clockwork moc (from two years ago) was a failed attempt at the genre. This MOC also shares some aspects with Leyka (a bird moc from last year) and helped to make this one.

The exposing gears on the sides of the body was done on purpose to show its inner mechanics. None of the gears can move. They are for appearance purposes only

It actually reminds me TWO thins at the same time: The Songbird from Bioshock: Infinite, and the Clockwork Dragon from a game designed for Android, and called Dragon Island.

Pretty f-ing cool design, 10 stars out of 5!

This is really cool. I'm impressed that you managed to keep so much of it light gray, not the most common color. The color scheme's really well done, and the gears give it a great steampunk feel.

Love what you did for the head with the Nuva armor and the 5-length cladding as the beak. Those wings are just perfect, and the gears spread throughout... functional or not, they look gooood :D

First off, love it! Truly the best Clockwork MOC I've seen yet Dylan. :clap: I know people are comparing it to the Songbird from Bioshock Infinite. At first I thought that's what this was. Was that an influence here at all?

I think this has been my problem with a clockwork MOC, I've tried it a couple of times with failed results, I think its because I kept trying to make all the gears able to move.

The reason that people compare it to songbird is because they both share the clockwork/steampunk style. That is the only connection between them. Also Songbird is not a bird at all. It is a humanoid machine that also has wings and a bird shaped helmet (I did my research :p). Songbird wasn't allowed for the contest so I didn't bother of building something that was similar. To make the bird clockwork was an more original idea at the contest because everybody was making organic birds so why not a mechanical one.

So yeah, Songbird wasn't an influence at all, neither was Clockwerk from Sly Cooper (never heard of it until now). This MOC was from the start supposed to be a Clockwork revamp of Leyka and Leyka was made before Bioshock Infinite came out ;D

I'm not an expert of the clockwork genre, this being my first successful MOC at it. The tips some people gave me were: make sure that the gears look like they can work, don't add gears at random places where they make no sense and also use armor to cover up the inner mechanics. Keep those in mind and a clockwork MOC can appear before you know it ;D

Oh okay. It does bear a very striking resemblance to the Songbird from Bioshock Infinite. And yes I knew it wasn't an actual bird or anything. Its a machine that looks like a bird. I'm vaguely familiar with the world. I built Big Daddy remember? :P I was gonna ask if Clockwork from Sly Cooper was a factor to, but he's not. His Mechanical-i-ness is far less steampunk/clockwork than the name suggests. I am familiar with this series though since I've played and own the first three sly cooper games(its one of my favorite series of video games). I get where you're coming from now. It sucks when you have an original idea that is original to you, but because it does bear resemblance to other things people make the comparisons. I had that problem with Kutumah(people compared him to Aku from Samurai Jack and Hyderbawl(compared to the Pokeball). Its a tad annoying when you've got to explain that it really was an original thought process. Sorry if I piled on. ^^;

If I come back to the clockwork concept I will definitely be taking notes from you. The thing I tried to do was build the whole thing around a crank system, where if you turned a crank in his back and depending on how you slid some key gears around it would make his arms and head move. It was all overly complicated and left no room for aesthetics so it looked terrible, which was why I scrapped it. I guess I'll have to try static gears and see what that yields, but seeing as how you did a clockwork MOC to great effect, it severely takes the wind out of my sails to do one to. I like finding new ground in MOCing, not necessarily covering the same gound other's have, but I'm not completely opposed to doing it either. Thanks for the advice Dylan. :)

I just that I had the comment 'It looks like Songbird' so many times, now I'm just going to copy-past it if anybody else asks :D I had people saying (in Piece-Out) it was songbird when I had only build the the head and wings so I knew that other people would think it as well :p

My original idea was to give him wings to could fold up and/or spread out when you moved some gears around. That proved to be too difficult and wouldn't look good at this scale. So I know how hard it is a include functions into a MOC. Sometimes, like this moc, it is the look that makes the difference.

Does it have any functions? Most of the gears just look plainly aesthetic to me.

I have a giant box of bionicle parts from serveral different models, so that's not gonna be an issue. And I'm not looking for something exactly like the bird just and upgrade to and already existing model of rudaka, something to make her look more feminine or maybe a nice bull.
